Review by Josh Gillam ★★★½
In 1989 West Germany, U.S. Army Supply Specialist Ray Elwood (Joaquin Phoenix) spends his time making money on the black market under the nose of his clueless colonel (Ed Harris), but finds his lifestyle under threat when a no nonsense First Sergeant (Scott Glenn) arrives, in this black comedy war film co-starring Anna Paquin, Gabriel Mann and Elizabeth McGovern.
It has a great plot full of twists and turns, the story threads weaving together as the film goes on. Phoenix, at the centre of it all, is compelling, making Elwood slippery yet just likeable enough to keep you on his side. Harris and Glenn serve as great foils for the lead, the former adding a lot of humour and the…

Review by Andy Ferguson ★★★½ 1
It seems much more dated than I thought it would at only 13 years of age, yet I still find myself enjoying several aspects of Gregor Jordna's Buffalo Soldiers. It's always nice to see a military movie that isn't afraid to be about something more than war zones, boot camp, camaraderie, etc. There's a dark sarcasm and a dangerous, lingering rebelliousness about the Joaquin Phoenix character in the film, who chose the Army simply because it was between that and a prison sentence.
This film plays liked a fucked up hybrid of Biloxi Blues and Jarhead, like it's the sadistic stepbrother that you are afraid to go up and hand some candy to. It flirts with greatness at times, but…

"Buffalo Soldiers": an officer of the modern military-satire cinema battalion that includes "Three Kings" and "Jarhead", about bored, greedy soldiers goofing off, the absurdity of life in the army when the government has nothing important for you to do, and the consequences of taking this dangerous environment (its powerful resources and unhinged personnel) for granted. Maybe because this movie never got much press, wasn't a hit or a critical darling, isn't remembered, and Joaquin Phoenix does some somber little indie arthouse work from time to time, I expected that kind of experience from this, not a rambunctious, blatantly unrealistic, mostly-mainstream morbid underdog action comedy. Soldiers strung out on heroin drive tanks into a local gas station and cause a mass…

Review by Travis Lytle ★★½
Gregor Jordan's "Buffalo Soldiers" is watchable but scattered light-toned drama about the trafficking of contraband at an American military base. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the ne'er-do-well solider at the fore of it all, the film attempts to mix comedy and violence, resulting tonal whiplash. The cast is solid, and the story has its interesting moments; but the experience is only mediocre.
Revolving around the black market network pulsing beneath an American military installation in Germany, "Buffalo Soldiers" finds Phoenix's Ray Elwood in over his head as the network's point-man. Drugs, arms, and the Sergeant's daughter mix to create situations with which Elwood may not be equipped to deal.
The story has pieces and characters that should compel, but they rarely…

Review by Kevin_Robbins ★★★½
Buffalo Soldiers (2001) is a movie I recently watched on Amazon Prime and tells the tale of an overseas military base that has run amuck. A creative young man creates heroine and sells it across the base. As the soldiers get sloppy and high, an intense military officer gets stationed at the base. The young man will need to get creative to thwart him and continue his highly profitable business.
This movie is directed by Gregor Jordan (Ned Kelly) and stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Joker), Anna Paquin (X-Men), Ed Harris (Needful Things), Scott Glenn (The Hunt for Red October) and Michael Peña (Ant-man).
The opening of this movie is hilarious with the death of Parsons and the storyline and settings…

Review by Waldo ★★★★ 2
Gregor Jordan had the bad luck of making this flick after 9-11. Nothing bad about the military was gonna stand. Went directly to video. Joaquin Phoenix is a know it all batallion clerk living like a king on an American army base in Germany. It's 1989 and the troops are bored, unmotivated and doing all kinds of crazy, criminal shit. Selling arms, pure heroin, mop and glo, anything. Scott Glenn is his new top and he's there to kill the party life and crazy shit going on. Joaquin ups the ante by dating Glenn's daughter. Now the shit gets serious. A standout sequence involving a tank with the soldiers inside it smacked out their motherfucking minds. Bad ass climax, bad ass ending. "Boiling point". Love it!

The ending made it better.

Review by noir1946 ★
Buffalo Soldiers wants to explore the dangers, both to society and the soldiers themselves, inherent in a peacetime military and to celebrate the mindless recklessness the soldiers get up to when bored by their duties. As a result, it seems to be shaking its finger at the exploits of its protagonists while giggling at the sight of boys having a good time. Whatever its intentions, the film’s constant shifts in tone and the holes riveting the narrative doom it to failure.
Ray Elwood (Joaquin Phoenix) has joined the army only as an alternative to six months in jail. As a supply corporal at a base near Stuttgart, West Germany, in 1989, Elwood continues his criminal activity, selling supplies such as…

“What was that bump?”
“Oh, shit, man. We just ran over a car, man. We just squashed a car!”
“What kind of car?”
A Volkswagen. A fucking Beetle.”
“Oh, no. We squashed a beetle.”Just another movie I recorded on the DVR.
I had a big crush on the Phoenix brothers in the 80s & 90s. I still do really like Joaquin. This movie is worth it just to watch him and also for the spoof on military.True Fact. I was in the Navy from 2003 to 2007. During our 2005 deployment 2 fellow sailors were arrested in Australia for Drug trafficking… 1,000 sailors on our ship. 3,000 marines. We had no clue what happened until the next day when…

For the most part, I felt this was pretty good. I did feel it lost it’s way at the end though.
Phoenix and the supporting cast were great though, and that’s what I’ll remember about it.

A bitting war comedy with some great performances from Joaquin Phoenix & Scott Glenn. I get why this was pushed back numerous of times and even heavily criticized upon release on the heels of 9/11 as a fairly scathing look on the US government, but I'm so glad it was eventually released into the world and I disagree with those that brushed this off as anti-American. It's essentially just MASH with a hard R rating.

Review by Matt ★★★
More of a quietly entertaining 'cool' movie than anything particularly enthralling. There's not a lot ostensibly wrong with it but for a sort-of war film set at such an interesting time I did want a fair bit more.
And brilliant as he is in basically everything else, I couldn't help but feel Joaquin Phoenix wasn't quite right for his part.
